The exhibition Hybrids presents 8 project works by 16 artists, which were created through the synergy of individuals in pairs. Starting from the dual capacity that bears the very name of the Amphicar space, the selected individuals were invited to work in teams in order to propose new hybrid works, after a long period of mutual exchange and fermentation. In this way, the production process acted as a time of contact, reflection and evolution.
The exhibition curator and art historian, Elli Leventaki, notes in the text of the exhibition. The idea of operating exclusively as units is based on the disruptive logic of the capitalist model, which ensures the impermeable boundaries of social interaction and promotes competition at all costs. In this context, the organization and production of artistic and cultural work in a cooperative way can be seen as an almost revolutionary act. In the case of the Hybrids exhibition, it seeks to break down these barriers through a plan of action based on equal synergy and creation, to demonstrate the multiple new possibilities that can arise on the basis of Amphicar’s hybrid character.
Participating pairs: Marilia Kolymbiri & Melina Mosland, Eleni Arvanitis & Johnna Sachpazis, Danae Kotsaki & Marissa Satsia, Angelos Angelidis & Dimitris Kontodimos, Christina Koutsolioutsou & Nana Seferli, George Kostoglou (BOEM) & Theodora Kanelli, Dimitra Zervou & Martha Panagiotopoulou, Marilena Aliyzaki & Rika Krithara.
George Kostoglou (BOEM) and Theodora Kanelli, both with an architectural background, presented in a common space and around a common theme related to the concept of the artist’s studio and how it functions as a refuge for the artist. They were interested in the creative process and how it can influence this space and vice versa.
Theodora Kanelli began creating Game Board 1 in 2023 for an exhibition dedicated to the writer Pierre Loti, with a particular focus on his creative process and the importance of his workplace (which was his home) in this process. Pierre Loti always felt the need to travel and return home to create. His home became a model, which he reassembled each time with an object he brought with him. It became like a living museum, filled with symbolic elements from his travels.
She wanted to reproduce this space of PL’s creative act and, in response, her own in Game Board 2. It’s a “recharging” space, as she calls it, linked to the concept of recovery, a space where you go alone to recharge your batteries.
